Asymmetry and Scoliosis Consultation
The 1.5 hour Consultation
For those who want a detailed assessment and effective physical rehabilitation guidance for their asymmetry and scoliosis (scoliosis of the spine). This specialised Scoliosis service is provided by Michael Parr the consulting osteopath and rehabilitation specialist and our physical rehabilitation clinical lead of Elementary Health in Cambridge, who has travelled internationally to generate his training in scoliosis and asymmetry. He has been highly trained in clinical examination and diagnosis, scoliosis treatment with specialised physical exercise rehabilitation, including scoliosis specific exercise therapy (SSET) for spinal asymmetry and scoliosis rehabilitation. Combining multiple methods for scoliosis of the spine, including approaches of Schroth Method and The Schroth Best Practice Program (first clinician in Cambridge).
Using a method of clinical assessment for scoliosis and three dimensional disturbances, the consulting rehabilitation clinician looks at all three planes of postures and motion, including the functional presentation of Global Movement Patterns, which are some of the most up to date training methods and clinical skills for asymmetry and scoliosis assessment and physical rehabilitation.
This 1.5 hour consultation will be a detailed Asymmetry and Scoliosis focused assessment. Focusing around your spinal health, but with a broader musculoskeletal overview.
During a Specialised Asymmetry and Scoliosis Consultation, Our Aims Together Will Be:
Case History and Image Evaluation – Asymmetry and Scoliosis Consultation
A full case history is taken, and any prior investigations and treatments discussed, so these can be taken into consideration.
We will look at all provided medical images and reports, utilising these standing whole spine x-ray images while reviewing the current spinal shape, pattern type, any additional clinical classification types, and to calculate the degree of curvature currently present, for the formation of a diagnostic classification to scoliosis of the spine. Helping towards also calculating the known risk of progression of such a curve.
Tell us about you and how this impacts you!
Detailed Physical Assessment – Asymmetry and Scoliosis Consultation
A detailed dynamic assessment, along with some specific investigations and screening methods will be performed, and necessary measurements taken.
Through thorough assessment, we will help you to learn to distinguish the distinct patterns and possible progression factors associated with your spinal curves (scoliosis of the spine).
Outlining any potential postural activities in your daily schedule that could be affecting your spinal health.
We will learn about your back together!
Education and Management – Asymmetry and Scoliosis Consultation
A discussion of the salient findings will help towards the education and understanding, of current guidelines and necessary management.
Then when appropriate at this point, we will begin physical rehabilitation treatment and scoliosis treatment. This is the start of a scoliosis specific exercise therapy (SSET) programme.
Let’s get back the direction!
I developed scoliosis in several parts of my spine and this year a nerve in my spine became trapped causing pain and numbness. My exercises now are designed to support my whole body and straighten my spine. In addition to pain, scoliosis caused a 2 inch height loss which I am now regaining at the age of 68!
Michael’s knowledge of the body is phenomenal.
Asymmetry and Scoliosis Consultation Procedure
For new patients, or the application of new therapies, a full case history is taken, all provided images and reports reviewed, and any prior investigations and current goals discussed, so these can be taken into consideration.
Next, if clinically appropriate, you may be asked to dress down to your underwear to allow us to look at the presenting problem. (However, feel free to wear small shorts, if it makes you feel more comfortable).
You will then be asked to perform simple motions, a mixture of postures, motions and training patterns (dynamic assessment), along with some specific investigations and screening methods that will be performed, and necessary measurements taken, to help us gain information and understand your posture, spinal shape and movement capacity, and then interpret this in regards to your presenting complaint and goals. Identifying key links in your case for record and re-evaluation.
Then when required, a detailed passive examination, along with some specific investigations will be performed. If required, additional examination, and questioning will take place. A diagnosis will then be discussed, and if appropriate at this point, treatment will begin.
For scoliosis treatment, we provide a seamlessly layered combination approach, of assessment, diagnosis, education and therapeutic application. This includes education of anatomy in scoliosis of the spine, scoliotic patterns and pain theories, asymmetry and scoliosis therapy theories, manual therapy, osteopathy for spinal pain and rib pain, posture advice and training, lifestyle advice, hydrotherapy guidance, dietary overviews, and dynamic exercise therapy with motor control training rehabilitation, as scoliosis specific exercise therapy (Scoliosis Specific Exercises / SSE).
All of these work together to provide a uniquely structured approach, towards the aim of restoring your brain’s interpretation, or ‘mapping’ of your healthy functioning body, giving you back the control!
After treatment intervention, you will be re-assessed to ensure efficacy, and to optimize, the development of therapeutic strategies, for precision care and training.
Guidance for aftercare will also be provided, which assists by aiding to establish and prioritise lifestyle and training components, which can be initiated independently. As an adjunct in achieving your goals.
The scoliosis treatment and the aftercare are both working to form, a set of preventative methods, stopping or slowing of scoliotic progression, correction of current curves and rotations (scoliosis of the spine), reduction of pain, improved quality of life, improve exercise mechanics, improve breathing, encouraging mobilisation and flexibility and stabilization of correct postures, maintenance of the achieved corrections, education including attempts for correction of normal activity postures and training of activities of daily living (ADL’s).
During this process and any subsequent treatments (Scoliosis Treatment), you are welcome to have another adult individual present, to act as a supportive chaperone, if required.
When Asymmetry and Scoliosis is suspected. We recommend when appropriate, obtaining images of your Spine and Trunk, prior to attending the Initial Consultation when possible. The Images would need to be recent, performed in Standing Posture, Whole Spine X-Rays, ideally in 2 views. These views would be Posterior-Anterior View (P/A View) and Lateral View (Sagittal View). These images would need to be accessible for your Clinician. We can provide some known imaging centres to assist with this process if required.
We recommend for your first visit a Asymmetry and Scoliosis Initial Consultation. We recommend a Child’s first visit is a First Paediatric Consultation. The Initial Consultation will last 90 minutes (1.5 hours), and all follow up appointments for treatment will last 30 minutes, unless a 60 minutes treatment is required.
If there are any other questions, or, you wish to book a consultation with Michael Parr the consulting osteopath in Cambridge, based at Elementary Health. Please don’t hesitate to call or email.
